While all industries were hit hard by COVID last year, the hospitality industry was particularly fraught with lockdowns and occupation restrictions making it difficult for people to run their businesses.

But industry insiders say that 2021 is going see a boom for the sector as Australians return to the new normal and get back to socialising, eating out and enjoying a cold brew.

The industry will bounce back stronger than ever

Giorgina Venzin owner of Pawpaw, Mons Thai and Darvella in Brisbane told Broadsheet the industry would ‘bounce back stronger than ever. People more then ever want to be out celebrating, laughing and around friends and family.’

This is especially true as we can’t travel for holidays at the moment and so people are taking staycations in their local area and because large capacity events are still out of the question for many states it’s predicted there will be a rise in dinning out.

Australia already has a thriving foodie culture but this is set to grow as our opportunities for entertainment and social events have shrunk.

More staff are needed

However a growing concern amongst the hospitality industry is the staffing situation with many venues previously relying on working holiday visa holders and international students to fill the existing staffing gaps, a lot of the restaurateurs are caught without enough workers to meet the growing demand for quality service in the industry.

Oliver Brown, owner of Nola, Anchovy Bandit, Yiasou George and The Stag Public House in Adelaide expressed concerns over staffing that are nationwide, telling Broadsheet ‘Staffing is one concerning issue we are starting to see. We have never struggled so hard to recruit quality staff. We are just not getting the same number of applications as we have in the past. We are not sure if this is due to a reduction of international workers coming to Australia or a negative hangover from incentives such as Jobseeker. If this trend continues, we could potentially have a huge staffing issue within our industry.’

With the hospitality industry experiencing this post lockdown boom and staff loses hindering the resurgence there’s never been a better time to take the RSA course and jump on board on the hospitality band wagon.
