Industries Booming on the Gold Coast

Has the stress of the past few years got you daydreaming about a sea change?

Have you found yourself craving a life with the sand between your toes and the smell of sea salt in the air?

If you have, don’t worry you’re not alone. Seems every man and his dog is packing up and heading for the sun-soaked sands of the Gold Coast. The northern Gold Coast region is the fastest growing region in Queensland.

The Gold Coast as a city has been in a growth phase for a long time. While it was a favorite holiday destination for years for both Brisbane and the population along the coast of New South Wales, it is now one of the most coveted cities for real estate in Australia with median prices rising by 35.1% in the past year alone.

But moving might not be such an easy task. If you’re in the market for a lifestyle change and a move to the shady shores of the Gold Coast, you’ll probably be looking for a career shift that can help you get there.

That’s why we have put together this list of industries that are booming on the Gold Coast.

Security on the Gold Coast

The security sector has taken off around Australia with the move to the new normal resulting in the creation of hundreds of security jobs. And the Gold Coast is no different, there are security jobs in every industry on the Gold Coast.

Many different roles

Because security guards are required in all different kinds of industries and workplaces, there is a job to suit everyone in this versatile sector.

If you’re good with people and you have exceptional personal presentation and fantastic communication, there’s plenty of work going in concierge roles. The concierge is the well-dressed security guard who works at the front desk of a hotel or large building.

If you’re not great with people and you’re a bit of night owl, the roving guard work will suit you well. These security guards are responsible for patrolling the buildings at night. They drive from building to building and do the night patrols, checking the security system is switched on and working and everything is all locked up.

Are you really into nightlife and music? Then crowd control work is going to be perfect for you. In crowd control you are in charge of helping people at venues. This can be large stadium events like concerts, performances and sporting events or it can be at clubs and bars. Either way it’s a fun role with plenty of entertainment and plenty of jobs on the Gold Coast.

The training is short and sweet

Security guards in Queensland are required to complete specific training in order to apply for their security guard licence. The training is a Certificate II in Security Operations and this course is taught over an 8-day workshop with some online study required before attending the face-to-face component.

The course only costs $1500 but most people qualify for some government funding. If you would like to know more about breaking into the security industry you can check out the course here or get in touch with one of our course advisors here.

Food processing on the Gold Coast

There is a lot of work going in the food processing industry at the moment. This is as a result of the issues with supply chains, ongoing extreme weather events and the staffing issues many industries are encountering due to COVID.

Heaps of jobs to choose from

The food processing industry includes a wide variety of jobs. Food processing is the industry which processes food from its raw form into the finished product that is sold at grocery stores or through wholesalers or even in restaurants.

If you’ve got a passion for science and an interest in chemistry, you could be a food technologist, a bacteriologist or a toxicologist. These professionals do need to get a degree to get a foot in the door of their industry, however it’s a growth area of food processing and you could be a trail blazer who discovers a bacteria that fights depression!

If you enjoy cooking and are a fast efficient worker you might be a good food batch maker, cooking machine operator or factory baker. These people work in tandem with large machinery sometimes cooking or baking and sometimes monitoring the machines and completing quality control. One thing is for sure you’ll have a lot to show for at the end of your work day with copious amounts of food created in your shift.

Tourism on the Gold Coast

The tourism industry has suffered in the last few years and it’s no surprise that Aussies everywhere are ready for a holiday. That’s why there’s a boom coming to Gold Coast tourism. While the Gold Coast has always been a popular holiday destination, the numbers are about to swell to accommodate the people who would usually have taken overseas holidays that now don’t want to risk that trip.

A role for everyone

There’s never been a better time to jump into the tourism industry. There are so many different roles you can do. You could be a tour guide; on an architectural tour, a boat tour, a gallery tour or a hinterland tour.

Or if you’re an expert organiser, you could work for the hotels, managing bookings. If you’re a great people person, ou might make a good event planner, throwing the best parties but with a heap of extra responsibility and big names involved.

If you’re just a big kid at heart, there’s always work going at the theme parks on the Gold Coast. You could be the person dressed up in the Batman costume at Movie World or the person in charge of pushing the button on the tower of terror.

Hospitality on the Gold Coast

Hospitality is another industry booming on the Gold Coast at the moment as people return to restaurants and bars in the wake of the new normal. That means it’s getting busy out there and they need more staff.

Roles to suit each lifestyle

There is a role in hospitality to suit every lifestyle. If you’re an early bird and you want to be able to spend your afternoons at the beach and your evenings with your friends, you can become a barista and work in cafes. These shifts often start at 6 or 7am and end by 2pm or 3pm.

If you’re more of a night-time person you can start your day with a surf at the beach and then head over to the surf club in the afternoon to work behind the bar. The great thing about hospitality is everyone works hard and plays hard, and you’ll probably find a good crew of friends which is handy when you move to a new city.

If you do want to go into hospitality one thing that will really help you land your first job is an RSA. This is the required certificate to be able to work in a venue where they serve alcohol. Asset College delivers this course in a half-day in-class workshop for $95. You can check out the course here or get in touch with our friendly course advisors here.

Retail on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has some of the best shopping in Queensland. Not only do they have one of the largest shopping malls in the country in Pacific Fair, but they also have Harbour Town where you can find all kinds of great bargains on designer brands.

The retail industry on the Gold Coast will benefit from the same boom as the tourism industry. As more people come to the Gold Coast on holiday there will be more tourists shopping and spending money with the stores and brands there.

Work with something you’re passionate about

The great thing about working in retail is you can find a job that lines up with your passions. If you love to get creative in the kitchen, then a retail position with one of the cookware or cooking supplies stores is going to be fun for you. If you love surfing, then a position helping people choose their surfboard or wetsuit will work for you. There are all kinds of jobs you can do in retail, you’re bound to find something that you like and that you’re passionate about.

Courses to help you

If you are looking for a career change and a move into retail, you’ll need to be a good people-person, good with sales and helping customers. While you don’t need any formal qualifications to do a role like this, it never hurts to have a little help.

The best course for someone looking to break into the retail industry would be the Certificate III in Retail. This course is delivered entirely online so you can start anytime and study from anywhere in Australia.
