You know how it is, you think you’ll get so much done but before you know it your holiday break is over, and you have nothing to show for it except a strained waist belt and a lot of crinkled wrapping paper. Completing short courses over the holidays can be a great way to get you started on your new years resolutions!
So, if you’re looking to upskill and get out of the house these holidays, we’ve got five short courses you can do in just a few days. Whether it’s something practical and lifesaving like First Aid or something interesting and community serving like becoming a Justice of the Peace, we have the course for you.

First Aid
First on the list is the First Aid course. This truly is a course for everyone. There isn’t anybody who can’t benefit from taking a first aid course.
It makes you more confident in a crisis, empowers you to help others and enables you to put your hand up for additional duties in the workplace like being the first aid officer for your floor.
What does the course cover?
The Provide First Aid course covers three basic units of first aid giving you foundational skills.
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
- HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
This means that once you have completed the course you would be eligible to be the nominated first aider in your workplace or community organisation. You’ll be able to provide CPR and basic first aid in an emergency situation.
How is the course delivered?
The practical side of the first aid course is delivered in a one day face-to-face workshop on campus with the course running at our North Lakes, Logan and Gold Coast campuses. But before the face-to-face workshop, you will need to complete an online assessment that is sent to you when you enrol.
How much does it cost?
The Fish Aid course costs $150 and considering you could save someone’s life with the skills you learn, it’s a very affordable cost for self-improvement.
The first aid course is a great investment in yourself and your personal development. Keep in mind that you will need to do a refresher every 12 months to keep your CPR up to date. You can read more about the course here.
Firearms
One of our most popular courses is the Firearms Safety ABH course. This course is a basic introduction to firearms. It is a perfect course for anyone to do on their holiday break who is interested in learning more about firearms and wants to get a recreational firearms licence.
What does the course cover?
The course covers category A, B and H firearms which are the most commonly used firearms for sport shooting, target shooting, recreational shooting and occupational shooting.
It includes firearms such as:
- Air Rifles
- Single and double barrel shotguns
- Bolt action rifles
- Lever action rifles
- Pump action rifles
- Muzzle loading firearm
- Combination guns (rifle and shotgun)
- Semi-auto pistols
- Revolvers
- Paintball Guns
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered in a face to face workshop followed by practice at a live firing range. W=We deliver our course at our North Lakes location and at other locations with training partners such as Ipswich Sporting Firearms, SEQ Firearms and Foresight Tactical.
How much does it cost?
The course fees vary depending on where you go to complete the course but if you opt for North Lakes, the cost is $175.
The Firearms Safety A, B and H course is a perfect course for anyone wanting learn more about firearms and maybe cross firing a gun off their bucket list this holidays.
JP Course
Becoming a Justice of the Peace is a goal many people aspire to. JPs are pillars of their communities, providing a valuable service and offering support to their community.
To become a Justice of the Peace, you have to submit an application through your state member of parliament to be appointed to the role and to be able to the make that application you have to complete the JP course.
Once qualified and appointed, a JP is able to witness oaths and affidavits, take statutory declarations and affirmations, witness signatures, attest the execution of a document, certify a true copy of an original document, issue search warrants and arrest warrants and grant bail.
What does the course cover?
The course covers everything you need to know about providing the services of a JP to your community, including all the nitty gritty legalities involved. You’ll learn about witnessing documents and certifying copies as well as performing non-bench judicial and minor bench duties.
How is the course delivered?
With this course you have the option to either come to the campus and study the course in person through our two-day workshop or to complete it online through self-paced, trainer supported study.
There are benefits to both options but we always recommend attending in person because this course has a lot of legal jargon and it can be helpful to have a trainer there in person to go over the course materials with you and your peers.

How much does it cost?
The course costs $375. The cost is same whether you complete it online or come and do it in person.
The Justice of the Peace course is a great course to do if you want to give back to your community and learn more about the justice system in Australia.
RSA
The Responsible Service of Alcohol course or RSA course is a great short course for anyone who wants to work in customer service or hospitality. This half day course covers everything you need know about the responsible service of alcohol and it is the required course to legally be allowed to serve alcohol as part of your job.
What does the course cover?
The RSA course covers everything you need to know about the laws for serving alcohol. The course covers selling and serving alcohol responsibly, assisting customers to drink within appropriate limits, assessing alcohol affected customers and identifying customers to whom sale or service must be refuse, as well as how to refuse to serve alcohol.
How is the course delivered?
The responsible service of alcohol course is not delivered through online study at this stage however you can attend one of our campuses to complete the course. The workshop takes four hours and you can complete it at our North Lakes, Logan and Gold Coast campuses.
How much does it cost?
The Responsible Service of Alcohol course costs $95. It’s a well worthwhile investment if you are planning a career where you may have to serve anyone alcohol.
Work Health and Safety
If you’ve got a passion for safety and procedure and you’re looking for a way to step up and specialise in your career, you could become the Health and Safety Representative for your workplace. To do that you’ll need to study the Health and Safety Representative course.
What does the course cover?
The Queensland Health and Safety Representative course covers a range of topics you’ll need to be across to work effectively in this role.
In the course you’ll gain an understanding of work health and safety legislation and how it applies to your role as an elected Health and Safety Representative. The course also covers the skills and additional knowledge required under WHS legislation to issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and direct unsafe work to cease orders.
You’ll learn about inspections, notifiable incidents and incident investigation as well as issue resolution, support for HSRs, managing risk, consultation and representation and more.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered through a five day face-to-face workshop on campus at our North Lakes location. Due to the rules around this course, there is no online option.
