Social media is an industry on the rise
Think about how many times a day you check social media. Now consider how many people around the world are scrolling through their feed at any given time. Social media is fast becoming the largest marketing pool. In just 3 years time, the number of people using social media is expected to grow from 3.6 billion to 4.4 b billion. That’s half the worlds population.
With growth like that it’s no surprise that the job growth of this area is sky rocketing. According to Linkedin there has been a massive increase in the number of social media jobs advertised on the platform, 1357% between 2010 and 2022.
There are multiple career options
This growth has also meant we have seen more differentiation and niche roles within the industry. It’s no longer one person doing all the work associated with social media. There are several different fields you could go into in social media marketing including strategy, scheduling, community management, content creation and paid campaigns.
The course
If you’re interested in getting into this exciting field you could start by completing a Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication. This course provides you with a basic understanding required to work in marketing. You’ll gain knowledge on how to design and implement a marketing plan, how to work within a marketing budget, how to design and run marketing campaigns and apply digital solutions to optimise your time. It’s a very valuable course for anyone looking into this field.
Security
The pandemic and the return to the new normal saw the creation of a flurry of security jobs. This industry is booming. ASIAL are estimating that the private security industry will grow by 3% every year. Between now and 2028 that’s a lot of new security guards, CCTV monitors, gatehouse and roving guards.
Diversity of roles
And the great thing about the security industry is the diversity of the roles available. From gatehouse guarding to manning the concierge at a swanky hotel and cash-in-transit, there is a role in security to suit everyone.
What kind of role you decide to take on in security will depend on your personality. Are you good with people, very well presented and helpful? Then you’d make a wonderful concierge guard. This is the person who mans the desk at a fancy hotel or large corporate building and helps those coming through to navigate where they need to go. They often also assist with enquires about where to eat, shop or see some entertainment. It’s a great role for a real people pleaser.
If you’re more a quiet type and a night owl, you’d suit gatehouse work or roving guard work. In the gatehouse you’ll be monitoring the CCTV footage and tracking who enters or exits the premises, you’ll also have to do patrols. If you are a roving guard, you are basically in charge of going around building to building and checking that the security system is armed, everything is locked up and no-one is having around where they aren’t meant to be.
There are so many different roles you can do in security. It just depends on what you like and what you ARE like.
The course
In order to work in security you’ll need to complete the Certificate II in Security Operations. This is course required to be able to apply for your unarmed security guard licence.
This course is taught over an eight day face-to-face workshop in QLD. Durations vary in other states. There is also some online work to be completed before and after the workshop. In the course you’ll learn how to apply WHS , emergency response and evacuation procedures, how to patrol premises, how to screen people and personal effects and items to maintain security, monitor and control access and exit of persons, how to control persons using empty hands techniques and much more.
The cost
To complete the Certificate II in Security Operations through fee for service the cost is $1500 but most people are able to access some government funding in their state or territory.
If you don’t qualify for any funding, there are also scholarships and payment plans available.
Cyber Security
The global cyber security industry is set to grow to 345.5 billion by 2026. This industry is booming and the high demand combined with a lack of trained professionals has created a job shortage driving up the asking price for salaried positions. The average yearly salary for a cyber security professional is now 118, 336.
What kind of jobs can you do
As a cyber security expert, you could do many different roles. There are all sorts of career paths within this thriving industry. You could become a security analyst planning and executing a clear and faultless security plan or you could be a security auditor looking for weak spots and points of entry into a company’s online system in order to expose these weakness and fix them before a criminal can get in there and exploit them. Or if you’re so inclined you could go into forensic cyber security and help law enforcement catch criminals. There are so many opportunities in this sector.
The course
To start on your cyber security journey, you can complete the Certificate IV in Cyber Security. In this course you’ll learn all about how to monitor the risk of cyber security attack, implement appropriate software, use a range of tools and procedures to mitigate cyber security threats, protect an organisation from insider security breaches and develop systems to minimise network vulnerabilities and risks.
Human Resources
After the mass lockdowns and sudden shift to working from home, human resources departments were more crucial than ever in an organisation. The intensity of the situation and the logistical and situational challenges helped to illuminate the importance of this industry.
With this renewed appreciation for the human resources department comes a jump in job growth. In 2020 there were 78,800 Australians working and by 2024 this is expected to swell to 90,000. There’s never been a better time to make the shift to this industry.
What skills do you need to work in HR?
To excel in a human resources role, you’ll need to be compassionate and good with people. Human Resources Managers need to have excellent emotional intelligence to navigate the corporate human resources department. You’ll need to be able to get a feel for people and have good instincts for hiring. Monitoring the company morale is also important.
