Ashleigh’s Career Was Reshaped With Security
Ashleigh’s Career Was Reshaped With Security
This story was written by Ashleigh McCulloch.
Before security I worked 11 years as a qualified Graphic Designer. I then became a Job Seeker, and my placement consultant suggested working in the security industry because of my outgoing personality. I found out about studying with Asset College because of a personal friend who recommended Asset College as one of the most professional training providers in security.
I started studying with Asset College doing the Certificate II & III in Security Operations, from there, I studied Firearms and Defensive Tactics, RSA, First Aid, White Card (Construction), and Maritime and Aviation Screening Operations. The training provided was professional, comprehensive and covered scenarios I would be faced with as a security officer. The instructors provided plenty of opportunities to ask questions and provided constructive feedback on how to handle difficult situations.
After my studies were completed with ASSET, I was invited to attend an Employer Connection event at Spring Hill. I created a list of questions to ask the employers and refined my resume to hand to every employer. I ensured I met with every employer at the event, asking them questions which could help ensure I was the right fit for them, and they were the right fit for me – I asked them questions such as what sites they looked after, what hours would be expected, and job expectations (static, roving, cctv monitoring).
My first ever shift in the security industry was with Cap Security working at State of Origin, Suncorp Stadium. So you can see, I was definitely thrown into the deep end and learnt very quickly how to handle patrons, communicating with supervisors, and observing patrons and their behaviour. Through the Employer Connections events, I gained employment with Cap Security working all football (both AFL and NRL) events, Cricket, and Stadium concerts. From there, I attended ANOTHER Employment Connection event, I gained employment with ISS Security as an Aviation Protection Officer because of my training with Asset College, ISS gave me an advantage because of the hands on experience provided to fulfil the role.
I then contacted Wilson Security, as I ensured I kept contact details of all employers I met during these Employment Connection events. I worked at various sites, such as airline headquarters, supermarket distribution centres, and Government sites. I worked with Wilson Security for 3 years.
Throughout this time I gained a lot of confidence with handling difficult/confrontational situations, communicating with clients, and providing a friendly approach with patrons and government staff.
