What Jobs Can I Get With Brisbane an Australian Security Course?

For many prospective security students one of the first questions we get asked is What jobs can I get with an Australian security course?

Luckily for them, there are so many opportunities in the diverse world of security.  

What are the Australian Security courses?  

Asset College runs several security courses that can help beginners and security industry professionals alike to excel in their careers. 

The first course you’ll need to do is the Certificate II in Security Operations. This course is the standard requirement to gain your security providers licence in all states and territories.  

The length and delivery of this course varies depending on the location where you take the course, but you’ll learn basically the same skills in each location. You’ll learn how to:  

• Apply effective communication skills to maintain security 
• Apply legal and procedural requirements to work effectively within a security team 
• Apply WHS, emergency response and evacuation procedures to maintain security 
• Apply risk assessment to select and carry out response to security risk situations 
• Provide quality services to a range of security clients 
• Protect self and others using basic defensive techniques 
• Patrol premises to monitor property and maintain security 
• Screen people, personal effects and items to maintain security 
• Monitor and control access and exit of persons and vehicles from premises 
• Monitor and control individual and crowd behaviour to maintain security 
• Apply security procedures to manage intoxicated persons 
• Apply security procedures to remove persons from premises 
• Escort and protect persons and valuables 
• Provide first aid 

Once you’ve completed the course and received your certificate yoou can then apply for your security providers licence. This is when you can start your job search!

What jobs will a security licence allow me to apply for? 

There are so many different kinds of security jobs you can do once you gain your security providers licence. We have listed and explained a few of the more common ones below but there are many more out there.  

Retail Security  

Retail security officers work in the shopping centres. They have to patrol, monitor CCTV footage, help people who are lost, confused and in trouble. The world of retail security isn’t as quiet as it might look at first glance.

They often also assist covert security officers and loss prevention officers who are working within the same centre. They are the point of contact for emergency assistance, so they are required to provide first aid in the event of an emergency and to assist with evacuation procedures.  

Concierge Security 

Concierge security guards work on the desk of large corporate buildings or hotels. They are responsible for ensuring only those who are allowed to, enter the building.

They also often provide customer service in their role, acting as a liaison for the clients, providing directions, recommending local spots and finding out requested local or logistical information.  

Patrol Security  

Patrol security guards generally work for a company that provides security to lots of different places. This often includes closed housing estates, company buildings and apartment buildings.

Security guards working for these companies are called roaming patrol guards. They generally drive around to the different buildings and locations and complete patrols there, checking alarm systems and ensuring the buildings are safely secured overnight. 

Control Room Security  

Control room security guards work in monitoring centres watching CCTV footage or monitoring back to base alarm systems. They need incredible attention to detail, and they often have to liaise over radio with patrol guards or general guards who are on the ground.  

Crowd Control Security   

Working in crowd control is often the first job experience many security guards get when they get their licence.

Crowd Control security guards work in pubs, clubs and at large scale events as a Security Officer. It’s their job to keep people safe, ensure they move safely in and out of the venue, that only those who meet the requirements are allowed entry, to check IDs and to keep incidents from escalating. 

Other areas that you will be able to apply for jobs in include: 

Hospitals, universities and schools 

Security guards are needed in these large institutions for walking patrol positions, CCTV monitoring and general guarding duties.  

In hospitals, security guards must be ready to help and protect staff and other patients, especially in the emergency department.  

Whereas at universities and schools guards are often there to patrol, monitor the safety of students, staff and school property both in and out of hours. There’s often a lot of walking patrols involved in these positions.  

Gatehouse 

Security guards are needed for gatehouse positions in warehouses, distribution centres and logistics companies. Gatehouse positions generally involve staying in your gatehouse, monitoring CCTV footage, getting credentials of all those trying to enter the premises and only allowing those who are supposed to be there to come in.  

They also often need to do on foot patrols to check everything around the premises of the buildings.  

As you can see, the opportunities for work in the security industry are vast. Even at entry level there are so many opportunities and roles to explore.  

With some additional training, there are other roles you can do as a security guard.

Aviation Protection Officer 

Aviation Protection Officers are specifically trained to work in airport security.

Using specialist equipment, they learn how to screen luggage and people to ensure the safety of staff and passengers on flights. To enter this part of the industry you need to complete further training. The initial qualification is the AVI20118 Certificate II in Transport Security Protection. 

Cash in Transit Officer 

Cash in Transit security officers are responsible for the safe transport of cash or valuables from one location to another. They are the guards who see emptying or refilling the ATMs. But they are also employed for other jobs such as transporting expensive jewellery or works of art.

To enter this part of the industry you need to go on to complete the Cash-In-Transit component which is added to your Security Providers Licence. If you would like to work in armed security, you then need to complete the Firearms and Defensive Tactics course. On successful completion, this course will allow you to apply for an Occupational Firearms Licence. This licence is separate from your Security Providers Licence. 

RSA 

It’s important that security guards also complete their RSA or Responsible Service of Alcohol. In order to be able to work in any venue that serves alcohol you will need an RSA even if you are not directly serving the alcohol.
