ASSET Trainers Get It Done Come Hell or High Water in the NT!

The last week in the North Territory has been an eventful one. Between Darwin’s lockdowns and the Alice Springs floods, the community has been through a tough time.

And ASSET’s students and trainers are no exception.

Asset College was a little over halfway through one of our scheduled Darwin security courses when the lockdown struck.

At ASSET, we have built a thriving training program in Darwin that brings together suitable security guard candidates with security recruiters, providing the opportunity to complete Certificate II in Security Operations and connect with industry leaders.

Our trainer Ian had to think on his feet at our recent Darwin Security course when Darwin was thrown into lockdown. The three-day snap lockdown was implemented after a man who flew into the state for work tested positive for COVID19 after arriving.

Thankfully, the snap lockdown was lifted and our students were able to finalise their training with little interruption to the schedule.

But the drama didn’t end there for our trainer Ian Hodgson, who had to travel to Alice Springs where he was training another cohort of security students.

Ian, who has over 28 years’ experience in security, arrived in Alice Springs to discover the region was flooding. After waiting half an hour for a cab, Ian and his driver, who by some strange coincidence was also attending the course with Ian, began the trip out to his accommodation.

After collecting the keys, Ian and the taxi driver discovered that their route to the accommodation was under water because the usually dry Todd River was running higher than it had in 20 years causing flooding over the nearby roads.

Not one to let a little setback like major flooding keep him from doing his job, our trainer Ian got the driver to leave him as close as he could to the hotel, about 1.3 kilometres away, and then proceeded to walk the rest of the way carrying the 53kgs of luggage required to teach the course to the accommodation on his own.

Ian is currently training our Certificate II in Security Operations students in Alice Springs, proving Asset College trainers get the job done come hell or high water.
