11029NAT Course in Firearms and Weapons Safety (approved for firearms licensing in Queensland)

A basic introduction to the firearms industry, this course covers the skills and knowledge essential to firearms legislation, firearms in the community, licensing requirements, safe handling, firearms terminology, safe storage and transport, as well as additional information which is essential to all shooters.

This course covers Category A and B weapons.

These are the most common firearms used for sports/target, recreational and occupational shooting activities. Examples of firearms under these categories include:

  • Air Rifles
  • Single and Double Barrel Shotguns
  • Bolt Action Rifles
  • Lever Action Rifles
  • Pump Action Rifles
  • Muzzle Loading Firearm
  • Combination Guns (Rifle and Shotgun)
  • Paintball Guns

On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for 11029NAT Course in Firearms and Weapons Safety (Approved for Firearms Licensing in Queensland).

This course meets the training requirements to apply for a QLD Weapons Licence for categories A and B.

Firearms Licensing

Firearms Licensing in QLD is administered by the QLD Police Weapons Licensing Branch. Information regarding the licence application process is provided during the course. For more information about licensing or to lodge an online application click here.

Make sure you have all the required documents to apply for your licence.

You must apply for your QLD Weapons licence within 12 months of the issue date listed on your certificate.

Apply for a Licence Online
To apply for a weapons licence in Queensland you must:

  1. Meet the personal eligibility requirements.
  2. Have a genuine reason to hold a licence.
  3. Have access to secure weapon storage.
  4. Complete an approved weapons safety course covering the category of weapon you’re applying for and provide your statement of attainment. The course must have been completed within the 12 months before the date of submitting your application.
  5. Provide the supporting documentation requested during the application process.**
  6. Provide a passport-quality digital image of your head and shoulders against a plain background. This image will be printed on your licence card if your application is approved.
  7. Pay the required fees.
  8. Attend a Queensland Police Station with 100 points of identification once your application is at the final stages of assessment.

Examples of evidence for genuine reason to hold a firearms licence include:

Sports/Target ShootingMembership of a shooting club
Recreational Shooting (Hunting)Details of your property or a letter from a property owner granting permission to use their property
Occupational Requirement (including Primary Producers)Details of your property and the requirement for firearms or a letter from your employer outlining the requirement for you to use firearms
Collection of FirearmsLetter outlining the firearms to be collected or membership of an approved firearms collectors guild

This course does not meet the requirements for a Security Guard Firearms Licence – refer to our Firearms and Defensive Tactics course if you intend to apply for a security firearms licence.

In order to participate in this course, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be over 18 years of age (or 11 years or older and have written consent from parent/guardian to attend)
  2. Must not have any physical or other impairment which would prevent you from handling firearms safely – if unsure, seek advice from your GP or contact us to discuss suitability
  3. Must not have any criminal convictions (relating to drug use, violence or weapons) in the past five years
  4. Must not have been a subject to a domestic violence order in the past five years
  5. Must not have been a subject to an involuntary mental health order in the past five years

Please be advised we are unable to train students on a student visa. You must find a CRICOS registered training provider.

You will need to provide on enrolment:

  • Enrolment Form
  • USI
  • Photo Identification
  • Payment

We require all of the above to be completed and until all of these are received your spot is still tentative and therefore if the course becomes full, your booking may be moved.

This course covers the following units of competency:

  • NAT11029001 Demonstrate knowledge of weapons legislation, weapons, and community safety
  • NAT11029002 Use Category A and B firearms lawfully, safely, and responsibly

This course is delivered face-to-face over 8 hours. This consists of a theory assessment completed online in class and a live fire range practice at an approved range.

Asset College runs our Firearms Safety courses at North Lakes. We also have training partners who can run Firearms Safety courses in other locations.

For groups of 5 or more we may be able to schedule a stand-alone workshop to accommodate for your needs.

You can also complete either the Category H as standalone or our most popular course Category A, B and H together.
